The View from Someone Else's Window - "Somewhere on Ocracoke Island"
I often think about how many of the people I love live very far away from me. People I might only see a handful of times in my life.
Last year, when my father began moving from Chicago to France, he started sending me photos of his new surroundings; simple snapshots, glimpses of what he was seeing each day.
Something about those images ignited a passion in me. I picked up my brushes and began painting landscapes, a subject matter I’d rarely engaged with before. Each scene brought me closer to him, like I could step through the canvas and share his view for a moment...
…and as I painted, I thought of all the other views, and all of the other landscapes my scattered loved ones were seeing.
Thus, a collection was born: The View from Someone Else’s Window—paintings that bridge the distance, even if just for a moment.
In addition to painting the landscapes of my loved ones views, I made some paintings from memory. This painting captures the memories I have from childhood of arriving on Ocracoke Island. After an 18 hour drive, and one ferry ride we would head straight to the beach. With clothes on and the wind in our hair, we booked it from the car, over the dunes, and into the ocean. The path through the dunes is etched in my memory and now painted here.
