I often think about how many of the people I love live very far away from me. People I might only see a handful of times in my life.

Last year, when my father began moving from Chicago to France, he started sending me photos of his new surroundings; simple snapshots, glimpses of what he was seeing each day.

Something about those images ignited a passion in me. I picked up my brushes and began painting landscapes, a subject matter I’d rarely engaged with before. Each scene brought me closer to him, like I could step through the canvas and share his view for a moment... 

…and as I painted, I thought of all the other views, and all of the other landscapes my scattered loved ones were seeing. 

Thus, a collection was born: The View from Someone Else’s Window—paintings that bridge the distance, even if just for a moment. 

In addition to painting the landscapes of my loved ones views, I made some paintings from my imagination rather than my reality. As far back as I can remember, small cozy cottages surrounded by flowers have stolen my heart. It only just recently occurred to me to paint them. Even if I don’t live in one, I can certainly fantasize. This painting captures my fantasy.
